Title: When Starting a Family Takes More than Two

Program Description:
This year the Merck Serono Symposium will explore some of the medical, social and ethical challenges that emerge when prospective parents have to rely on others to have a baby.
The Symposium has been thoughtfully put together with prominent speakers looking at issues surrounding donor sperm, donor oocytes, same sex couples, surrogacy, and reproductive tourism. Promising new technologies such as uterine and ovarian transplantation and germ cell repopulation of the testis will be covered; as will some of the ethical issues surrounding surrogacy, donor and same-sex families.

Learning Objectives:
1.  Gain a better understanding of the ethical issues involved in gamete donation.
2.  Evaluate the welfare of donor children
3.  Learn about promising surgical alternatives to classical gamete donation and surrogacy
4.  Understand the challenges posed by cross-border reproduction and declining population fertility
