Professor Archil Khomassuridze

Zhordania Institute of Human Reproduction, Republic of Georgia

Archil George Khomassuridze, Ph.D., Professor, Academician was born 11, February, 1942, Tbilisi, Georgia.

From 1965-1985 he worked in Moscow, Russia, at the Institute of Endocrinology and, later, at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, where he defended Candidate and Doctoral Dissertations in Endocrinology and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Since 1985 he has been the General Director of Zhordania Institute of Human Reproduction. He is the member of many International Scientific Federations and Academies, Coordinator and Consultant of International Programmes in Reproductive Health (UNFPA, WHO). He is the founder of Reproductology and Contraception in the former Soviet Union and, later, in Georgia.

In 1997, at his initiation, Georgia founded a new medical discipline “Reproductology”. He is the founder and the President of Georgian Association of Reproductive Health, Head of Department of Reproductology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Tbilisi State University and was the initiator of introduction of Contraception, Endoscopic surgery and IVF in Georgia. He pioneered the introduction of Mifepristone in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductology in Georgia.

Since 1985, under his guidance, Zhordania Institute started the study and introduction into practice of Mifepristone and this process continues today. The results of studies are published in the main foreign and Russian high impact-factor journals. Many of them were presented at different International Conferences and Symposia.

Prof. A. Khomassuridze is an author of more than 450 scientific publications, 6 monographs, 5 manuals, 3 Patents – one of them:“Mifepristone as Labor Pain-Killer”.
